Lady Gan was the beloved concubine of Liu Bei, founder of the Shu Han kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 A.D.).  She was born to a family of commoners, though a diviner predicted a bright future for her.  By the time she turned 18, she had matured into a seductive beauty.  She was said to have porcelain white skin (a cherished commodity by Chinese standards of beauty), hence she was called "Snow Beauty".
On several occasions, she was captured by Liu Bei's enemies, but always managed to escape unharmed.  During the Battle of Changban, Liu Bei was forced to abandon her and their son, Liu Shan, but they were saved by Zhao Yun.
Lady Gan passed away in 210 A.D. After Liu Bei established the state of Shu Han and became its first emperor, he posthumously honored Lady Gan as "Lady Huangsi", which means "The Lady whom the Emperor misses".
